I don't know about you but one of my favourite posts has to be makeup collection and storage, I love being nosey and seeing how people store their makeup - I could spend hours searching for blog posts or YouTube videos - they are just that fun to read or watch. These kind of posts provide great inspiration and I know they certainly did for me a year ago when I was looking at new ways of storing my makeup moving from the carry case which became too small.
For the longest time I had always wanted my own dressing table, but thought with my room being located in the loft and all the flat walls taken I never thought I'd be able to have one in my bedroom. That was until I discovered the blogger favourite, the IKEA Malm dressing table, I fell in love and after measuring the unit realised it was the perfect height for my slanted walls. I picked the dresser up last year and I honestly couldn't be happier with it, the dressing table itself is fairly large and comes with a pull out drawer meaning I can store my makeup easily and efficiently. To complete my storage I also picked up the Helmer drawer unit, a cheaper alternative to the Alex drawers which stores nail polishes, travel bags and minis. My mirror is from Next, and is the perfect size and height for my bedroom. I did really want a large mirror but when you live in the loft it's just no possible, but I like that this has the magnified side opposite.
It's only until recently I have re-organised my storage to a point where I'm really happy with it, I decluttered the top of the unit leaving my makeup brushes and skincare items which aren't used on a daily basis on top of my Helmer units. Another blogger favourite comes in the form of the Skurar pots to store my makeup brushes, I have a mix of sizes for my face and eye brushes, along with the candle dish to store smaller skincare products that can't stand on their own. On the left hand side of my vanity I have all my current skincare and this just helps me make sure I'm using my skincare daily. Funnily enough the glass jars used to house my cotton pads and buds are sweet jars I purchased last year from TK Maxx, once I had finished eating all the sweets I knew they'd be perfect.
On the opposite side I've got my rabbit ring holder which stores small pieces of jewellery and hair grips, which fits the all white theme really well. Next to that I have just a few random bits including my makeup setting spray, body sprays and just some skincare bits that didn't fit on the other side. Lastly I have my first Muji purchase, a two drawer acrylic storage which keeps some of my eyeshadow palettes that don't quite fit into the drawers, along with my favourite perfumes on top.
Now for the exciting part, the Malm drawer - this houses the majority of my makeup purchases. When I first picked the unit up I was using cutlery trays from Ikea, however I've noticed they've become a bit battered so I needed some new drawer inserts. This is when I came across the Antonius basket inserts from Ikea, these suit my unit a lot better and organise my makeup perfectly - I do have slight OCD when it comes to storing my makeup. I think I paid around £1.90 for each insert which is a bargain, and they come with 5 different sized compartments four smaller and one larger. Unfortunately the drawer couldn't hold all three of the inserts so I did have to get my dad involved and cut the third one so that it fit.
On the left hand side of the drawer I store makeup accessories such as my sponge, curlers and pencil sharper along with my lip products. I am obsessed with lip products, as you can probably see, in the left hand side I keep my lip care products including all my balms and Vaseline tins. In the middle my biggest obsession my MAC lipsticks, some people collect stamps and I collection lipsticks - unhealthy obsession I know, plus all are alphabetised - remember I mentioned OCD? Above that I have all my miscellaneous lipsticks including both drugstore and high end and in the larger section I have homed my lip glosses, chubby sticks and lipliners.
The middle section is where I store all my facial products, which is predominantly blusher based. The longer section stores all my Benefit, Max Factor and Nars blushers, next to that I have all my foundations and a mixture of face powders and blushers - it's like a complicated game of Tetris to keep it all housed neatly. In the last two compartments I have my Mac blushers separating the larger blushers in the back and smaller in the front.
Lastly I've had to extend the face products into one of the smaller compartments which stores my concealers, primers and a rouge eyeliner. The bottom compartment holds all my eyeliners from gel to pencils - and not all black just incase you were thinking that's a lot of black eyeliners. In the longer compartment I keep all my mascaras and brow products, this was changed this morning as I did keep my brow products with eyeliners but were finding difficult to pick them out. At the end of the drawer I had a little gap which stores my Urban Decay Naked palettes perfectly.
Underneath my dressing table I have my dainty little Ingolf stool which you guessed was another Ikea purchase and a bargain at only £20. On the left hand side I have two gorgeous little storage baskets from Home Bargains, both keep my hair tools and products. I love the little bow detailing it just reminds me of shabby chic but on a bargain. On the right side (I didn't photograph as it wasn't very exciting) I keep my Soap and Glory bag (from last year's Xmas set) to keep any spare body products and above that my MAC keepsake makeup bags from their Xmas collection and a MAC shopping bag which is stored with my new spends that I'm waiting to photograph.
There we go, a little longer than I expected so if you've made it all the way through kudos! I really enjoyed doing this post, so may do it in video format for a better in-depth look. I hope you loved having a ganders at my collection and storage, I'd love to know how do you store your makeup? Let me know if you've done a similar post!
